Don't delete wp-content and wp-config.php

Go to your Online web host Cpanel account and click File manager which will open up your site's root directory. Here you can see different files like wp-content, wp-admin- wp-includes and other WordPress php files.
Now download latest wordpress installation package from www.wordpress.org and then extract it on your computer. Now be careful for the next step

Delete all files and folder in your web host site directory except wp-content folder and wp-config.php. Now click Upload. Upload all the files and folders except wp-content folder and wp-config.php of the newly downloaded WordPress version. 

Be careful before doing these steps. As i mentioned you don't have to delete wp-content folder and wp-config.php from your web host and also don't upload wp-content folder and wp-config.php of the newly downloaded WordPress version. Same procedure is applicable with your plugins up-gradation in WordPress. The only thing is you might have to reactivate the theme and plugin to make it work.
