How to Create a Sitemap in Wordpress

Sitemap as the word suggest is the map of any website that tells different search engine crawlers of all the links to pages that exist for that particular website. It is generally a pathway which search engine crawlers can follow along easily to navigate around the site.

Importance of Sitemap

It is really important that every site must have an accessible sitemap. Google itself suggest the webmasters guidelines to building a sitemap for site regardless of the amount of pages the site has, either if a site has a few pages or it has an entire database occupied by pages, sitemap is still very important.

Creating a Sitemap in Wordpress

Sitemaps can easily be created in wordpress via plugins. The best thing is that these sitemaps are dynamic instead of static, this means that one does not need to manually update the sitemap each time a new page is added to the site, rather wordpress plugin handles the job itself.

Google XML Sitemaps is the plugin that is used to create a sitemap for wordpress site instantly, all you need to do is to install the plugin and activate it.

Next go to Settings > XML Sitemap and follow the screenshot below to create a sitemap for the first time:
Leave rest of the settings to default and click on Update Options to save the settings. Once you are done, you will be able to view your sitemap on the following URL:
http://www.YOUR-SITE-NAME.com/sitemap.xml

Replace "YOUR-SITE-NAME" with your sites name.

That is it now you have a dynamic sitemap for your wordpress site that will automatically update as you keep on publishing new posts or pages. Also this plugin will automatically submit the sitemap to major search engines such as bing and Google.

Now that you have created the sitemap of your wordpress site, you can submit your sitemap to google.
